Documents Required for LEI Registration – LEI Requirement Explained

If you are intending to make transactions within the global financial system, there is a strong possibility that you will need to have an LEI (Legal Entity Identifier). This is mandated in many countries around the world, including India, and without an LEI, certain financial institutions may refuse to trade with you.

The LEI system has been mandated in India since 2017 in a bid to prevent banking frauds and improve market transparency. Traders, investors, and corporate borrowers are just some of those people who will require an LEI, and all entities trading internationally will require an LEI too.

If you are a Limited Company or Sole Trader in India, it might be that you don’t need an LEI by law. You may still decide to obtain a code before you need it, however, especially if you are engaged in any cross border activity, as LEI is quickly being adopted as a global standard.

Documents Required For LEI Registration

In order to obtain an LEI number, a number of documents will be required. We will ask you to upload these on our registration page.

The documents you upload will be used to corroborate your legal entity’s official registry data. They should contain your legally registered entity name, your current address, and the name of the primary stakeholders (such as the CEO),

Any of the following documents will be accepted as part of your LEI application

  • Power of Attorney or legal letter
  • Certificate of Incorporation
  • Certificate of Incumbency
  • Articles of Association
  • Registry Extract or an official filing
  • Any other binding document that confirms the required LEI data, such as an annual report, the Register of Directors, your audited accounts, etc.

Other documents that may be needed

Level 2 data may be required in certain circumstances.

If you are reporting parental information, you will need to confirm the existence of this relationship with documents associated with the consolidated accounts.

If you are applying for an LEI on behalf of a client, employer, or another legal entity, you may be asked to provide a Letter of Authorisation which has been signed by the authorised signatory.
